A notification lets you know when something relevant happens in the community, such as someone replying to your topic, mentioning you or interacting with a discussion you are following. Notifications help you keep up with conversations without having to constantly check the community.
Example 
You ask a question and another member replies. You receive a notification so you know there is a new response.
