I think it is! Lake Tekapo would have to appeal to the digital nomad’s of this world because of the lifestyle and the winter and summer activities. It has great bike tracks.
I lived at Lake Tekapo for 8 years and I loved it but it’s not for everyone. The downsides: it’s hot or cold or dry; the location is remote; the village doesn’t have a lot of facilities and accommodation and restaurants are expensive; BUT it has a close-knit community who know their neighbours and you always have someone to sit with at the pub on a weekend. Stunning alpine views and great weather make a perfect base for outdoorsy folks who love skiing and snowboarding, ice hockey, boating and fishing and living closer to nature and the elements.
Growing up at Lake Tekapo, the school children freely walk or bike across town to the bike trails at the regional park or the ice hockey rink.
People from all over the world are drawn to the beauty and lifestyle that Lake Tekapo offers: work is plentiful, the environment is pristine, and the night sky is unparalleled.
When you live at Lake Tekapo, everyday is like being on holiday from the hustle of city life.
Hi @Salicifolia. Is it true that the number of properties available for sale in LakeTekpo is reducing? if that is true it could imply that it may be a great area to buy into as a investment.
In a stuff article today, Stuff, Mackenzie is mentioned as one of the more expensive areas to own rather rent.
Most full time residents will start a side AirBnB business, in order to help with the shortfall and cover the large land prices. This can turn out quite profitable and a good supplement to the income.
I imagine the same is happening in Queenstown, the other area mentioned in the article with the highest difference between renting and owning affordability.
Tekapo in the news again. This time as a great place for peace and quiet.
Can it be both things at once - i.e. a tourist hotspot and a quiet town? It seems to pull it off especially when compared to the likes of Queenstown.
Hi @Spider. I like the question can Lake Tekapo be a tourist hotspot and a quiet town.
Having a look at google earth you can see that it’s not a big town and its centre is quite small. Check it out here on google earth. So I am also wondering too.
